Ernestine has a Masters degree in Social Work and in Business Administration. She has many years of professional experience in various social organisations, especially in the field of Youth Work. For more than 10 years she was professor at the Academy for Social Work in Linz. She was consultant and manager for some international projects within the European Union.

In 1995 she and her husband founded Soziale Initiative, a non-profit-organisation working with young people and families at risk in a number of settings. The organisation is approved and funded by the provincial government of Upper Austria, employing now 155 people.
