Final Impression, August 2009 Ms. Dani Noble
What I’ve learned from the Women and Girls at SambhaliIn reflecting on my experience at Sambhali, the friends I’ve made and the experiences I’ve had, I hope that I’ve been able to leave a lasting impression through my relationships and work. And while I hope that I’ve been able to share my knowledge and skills with the women I’ve come to know and love, I am certain that I’ve learned far more from them.
First and foremost, I’ve learned how to appreciate: appreciate family, friends, good food, the opportunity to learn, home, faith, and country. While the women and girls at Sambhali come each day to learn and strive to meet their goals, they continue to be thankful for the support and resources they have. This is a way of living that I would like to take with me as I return to my own culture and context.
I’ve also learned to rejoice at every opportunity. Every chance we had, we danced, sang, played, and just enjoyed life in general. Letting loose with fellow women and sisters is especially important–women share each other’s stories, struggles, and strength.
Finally, I’ve learned that ‘women’s empowerment’ is just as much about relationships as it is about training, education, and resources. It’s about having the opportunity to talk about domestic concerns in a safe environment with those you trust. It’s about collaboration as well as independent thinking. And it’s about having support as you overcome obstacles and strive to reach your goals.
